Engineering Recruitment – Market Commentary – October 2021

As the Eastern seaboard states are now starting to exit restrictions we have experienced a sharp increase in engineering positions needing to be filled. These are from many diverse engineering and manufacturing businesses. There’s a great mixture of businesses looking to recruit talented engineers at the moment. Of particular interest is a sizable group of exciting new technology-based businesses looking for high level engineers in roles that wouldn’t have existed several years ago – in particular electric/autonomous vehicle technology and 3D printing.

It’s definitely a great time to consider the career opportunities. We can provide guidance in identifying suitable opportunities, interview preparation and with the complete recruitment process. Why not check out our current positions on our job board that our company are working on?

We trust that you will enjoy our team’s latest market commentary and we will look forward to hearing from you.

Engineering & Manufacturing Operations

With the re-opening of NSW post lockdown, the signs remain positive with an increase of job enquiries and jobs in a number of different engineering and operational disciplines. The biggest change we’ve seen (which reflects the same changes already experienced in Victoria) is the number of companies offering a work/life balance by setting up their staff in home offices where possible. As before, closed borders are having a massive impact on the quantity of candidates, particularly as no new skilled migrants are arriving into Australia. Many people are also opting for a ‘sea change’, and thus the reliance on job advertisements through job boards has been somewhat diminished as suitable candidates are ‘head hunted’. Currently we have these interesting Melbourne and Sydney permanent roles – Architectural Draftsperson, Automation Engineers, CNC Applications Engineer, Design Engineer, HVAC Engineer, Hydraulic Designer, Mechanical Engineer, a Senior Operations Manager, various roles for a company that develops autonomous electric vehicles in Victoria, a Graduate Project Engineer for back-up power generators in SW Sydney and a pre-sales consultant for an intelligent traffic company based in Melbourne (must have great database skills). As we reach higher vaccination rates, we are getting closer to a new normal – whatever that may be, although the WFH hybrid model appears to be delivering the desired results to employers (where possible). Upskilling is also at an all-time high.

Building & Mechanical Services

As we reported last quarter the market remains very tight. Candidates are settled in their roles, but clients are recruiting aggressively for new talent. It is a golden time to secure a new role with improved terms and conditions. Demand and supply will equalise as NSW and VIC open up and candidates learn that others have secured roles with better salaries or enhanced work arrangements, but we have not reached that point yet. We are currently looking for Fire Services Technicians based in Canberra, Security Technicians in Auckland, New Zealand and an Electrical Estimating Manager in Sydney.  Go to our job board to learn more and apply.

Engineering Technology

Although we have been faced with heavy challenges, many of which are on-going, Technology has remained strong and we completed the last quarter on an all-time high placing many Engineers in fantastic roles and we enter this new quarter with even more opportunities from our clients. Currently we are handling permanent and contract roles in both Melbourne and Sydney. Given that Australia Wide have built a reputation as one of Australia’s leading recruiters of professional engineering technology staff, our trusted clients return to us time and time again and we are currently inundated with a number of interesting positions. These include, but are not limited to, Embedded Software Architects, Senior Embedded Software Engineers, Fullstack JavaScript Developers, Java Developers, Validation & Verification Engineers, Test Engineers, Hardware Engineers, C/C++ Embedded Software Engineers, FPGA Engineers, Technical Writers, Project Managers, etc. Because the market is currently highly competitive, we’re finding that clients are speeding up the hiring process to ensure they don’t miss out on high quality talent – candidates are receiving higher offers than in more usual times.
