AEW presents: 10 Reasons to love engineering

from Engineers Australia

Australian Engineering Week celebrates the significant and valued contribution engineers provide to our economic, social and technological aspects within our daily lives. Engineering is an exciting and rewarding profession, with an extensive range of disciplines, from biomedical or environmental engineering to mechanical or civil engineering, it is definitely a career to consider. 1. Engineers make it happen!

Engineers are innovative problem solvers. From transport and infrastructure, to solar powered energy and biomedical technology – engineers make it happen!

2. Smart devices

Everyone who owns a smart device is holding a piece of engineering. Engineers are always looking at new ways for smart technology to help us in our daily lives – such as apps and augmented reality.

3. Diversity

Did you know that there are over 70 disciplines in engineering? I’m sure you’ve heard of a civil engineer, but do you know about nano-engineering? This involves working with atoms and molecules measured in nanometres – basically, they’re invisible to the naked eye!

4. To infinity and beyond!

Past and current spacecraft launches are engineering triumphs. Only time will tell when you can holiday in space.

5. Sustainable future

The combination of engineering and science can help improve the environment. For example, products such as eco-friendly cars have been created to help reduce greenhouse and air pollution emissions.

6. Ahead of the game

Your favourite consoles and games wouldn’t exist without the work of computer engineers, software engineers and electrical engineers.

7. Get an adrenalin rush!

The Formula Rossa rollercoaster in Abu Dhabi reaches an overwhelming speed of 240km/h. This is the fastest rollercoaster in the world! And of course, an engineer was involved with the development of this ride.

8. Stay healthy

Feeling thirsty? Water engineers do daily testing on a city’s water supply to ensure that it’s safe to drink.

9. Caring and healing

Biomedical engineers work in places such as hospitals and rehabilitation centres to improve health care. Their work can be as complex as 3D modelling and developing artificial hands.

10. It’s fun!

Learning about engineering is fun for all ages. There are endless hands-on activities to get you thinking outside the box. With the knowledge of science, technology and maths – you could build your own gadgets!
