Engineering Recruitment – Market Commentary – July 2022
According to the Australia Bureau of Statistics the total number of job vacancies in Australia has increased by almost 30% since the same time last year with the highest growth in the last quarter emanating from the private sector due to many businesses recovering from the effects of the Omicron wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of businesses reporting at least one vacancy shows the extent of the sharp increase in labour demand with the proportion of businesses reporting at least one vacancy being a staggeringly record high 25%.
Furthermore, this huge figure of job opportunities is in reality even higher due to the fact that normally one quarter of all jobs are not even advertised and are filled by referrals or word of mouth, reflecting the huge surge in demand and the perfect time for any candidate looking for a new position.
With the market being so hot, we are naturally extremely busy filling vacancies for our clients and although the recruitment process is generally taking longer to complete (sometimes it can be incredibly quick too!), we continue to deliver great outcomes without compromising quality. We have recently added to our bench strength by the inclusion of Andrew Ednie as our latest Engineering Recruitment Consultant. Andrew is a Chemical Engineer and holds a Masters in Advanced Manufacturing Technology and has spent the past 30 years working at the Ford Motor Company in Product Development, Program Management, Engineering Management and most recently as a Global Program Management Chief for the Ford Ranger/Everest models. Andrew is now looking forward to focusing more on people and shares our excitement in having joined our expanding engineering team.

Engineering & Manufacturing Operations
The ABC recently reported that “Australia’s unemployment rate is 3.5 per cent, and it hasn’t been this low since August 1974”. If we look at the raw numbers; “currently, there are 480,000 job vacancies and 494,000 officially unemployed people”. This almost equates to one unemployed person for every vacant job. These numbers are staggering and has made recruitment challenging to say the least!
As a result of the above we have seen an increase in remuneration packages (in certain jobs), with some roles being filled in incredibly short time frames also. Employers are beginning to realise that the current candidate market is not going to present a candidate that ‘ticks all of the boxes’, and thus thought is being given to recruiting with training in mind in an effort to bring them up to speed quickly.
The long list of permanent roles on offer currently are wide and varied, and they range from Draftspersons, Design Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Senior Estimators, Structural Engineers, Rail Signalling Specialists, Project Managers, Product Development Managers, Process Engineers, Civil Engineers, Sales Managers, Maintenance Managers, General Managers, etc. As the labour market continues to flourish and unemployment remains at record low rates, this is the perfect time to secure your dream job. Look forward to hearing from you!
Building & Mechanical Services
As reported recently by the ABC, Australia seems to be closing in to full employment, and hence in this extremely tight labour market, the power dynamic has firmly moved to the candidates’ side. Candidates are requesting flexible working and more favourable conditions. It’s not always about the dollars, though that never does any harm, but without flexibility, assignments will take much longer to acquire the vital talent that clients need. If you are a client, do yourself a favour and ask yourself can this role be performed from home or in a hybrid model. Perhaps not initially, but once someone is trained?
And now to candidates…we have many client requirements for Graduate Mechanical/Commerce Engineers, Senior Fire Protection/Services Engineers, HVAC Sales Engineers and Estimators, Electronic Components Engineers, Electrical and Control Systems Engineers, Global Project Coordinators, Security System Engineers, Chemical Processing Project Managers and General Managers. Visit our website to apply for these roles and more. Keen to discuss some great opportunities with you!
Technology
The last quarter of FY21/22 was highly productive for the Technology team, with many roles successfully filled and many happily placed candidates. Currently we still have many roles and we are headhunting and advertising for C++ Developers, Firmware, Hardware and Electronic Engineers of all levels, Application and Technical Support Engineers, Solution Architects, Systems Engineers and Systems Engineering Managers across Australia.
With fewer candidates active on the market at the moment, some of our clients are recognising that a faster-moving interview process is required to secure their next employee. This combination makes it a great time to be a job seeker. Why wait to secure your next role?
