Engineering Recruitment – Market Commentary – October 2022

The engineering recruitment market is still rich in opportunities – there’s lots of potential for candidates either seeking their first role or contemplating the idea of changing their positions. We recommend that if you do decide to apply to positions that you should be seriously prepared for leaving your current role and accept an offer should the right role eventuate. Counter offers from current employers are on the rise but why accept a counter offer if your current employer only suggests a raise when they know you wish to leave? Did they undervalue you in the past and if so, will they do so again in the future?

The majority of jobs are not advertised so if you are keen to move but our current job board doesn’t have the right role for you, please still approach and chat with us so that we can possibly present you to other clients on our radar to see if there might be a fit. This approach often delivers great outcomes for all concerned.

Our team are experts in their field, are proactive and highly communicative so please share with us your journey and we will do our utmost to assist you. So, please do connect with us and it will be our pleasure to aid you along the recruitment process so as to successfully obtain your next interesting challenge. Alternatively, if you know anyone searching for a new position, please also talk to us or refer your contact to us, and we will do our very best to help. Hope you enjoy our latest market commentary, and we very much look forward to hearing from you.

Engineering & Manufacturing Operations

The most obvious market observation at the moment is that there are more roles than there are applicants who address the requirements of the role. There has also been a greater number of overseas applicants applying for role, even though the mast majority of them do not have the required work rights.

The positions that we have available are very typical engineering and operations based roles;  Maintenance Manager, Engineering Manager, Estimators, Design Engineers, Sales Engineers, etc., and although there are fewer available candidates, the requirements/expectations remain as per normal market conditions.

It is important that employers look beyond a candidate’s current skills and/or experience, and consider whether or not a candidate would fill a void in time and after training. As the number of new immigrants grows, so too will the requirement to train. This thought process is  being adopted by a number of our clients, and is proving to be very successful.

An interesting internal observation at Australia Wide Engineering Recruitment is the attraction of regional job opportunities to potential candidates. We are seeing candidates from Australia’s large cities actively seeking out roles in the regions. We can only speculate that employees who are currently working full time on site or where their hybrid arrangements are pivoting more towards on site in the cities, are seeing opportunity in reduced commute time and lifestyle benefits in moving to the county. This of course would follow what we have seen with 100% work from home employees over the last 3 years.

Building & Mechanical Services

The market remains tight for talent, so, it is a great time to move to a new role and get that locked in before the new year starts. We have client requirements for graduate Mechanical/Commerce Engineers, Senior Fire Protection/Services Engineers, Senior Electrical Engineers and other types of Building Services Engineers. Visit our website to apply for these roles and more.

Technology

As the current market stands, we are certainly still seeing a significant need for skilled Software Engineers. The shortage of skills is attributed to the earlier border closures and the number of jobs available remain in excess to the number of candidates available to fill these roles.

As far as ‘passive candidates’ are concerned, we are definitely seeing an increased interest from people who are happy to listen to what opportunities are available. These candidates are not necessarily actively looking to move, but they would if the right opportunity presented itself.

As 2022 enters its last quarter, we are still seeing ourselves in a candidate driven market. With so many opportunities available, candidates are in the position where they are able to pick and choose the opportunities they are interested in. Candidates are not only spoilt for choice of new vacancies, but are being offered higher salaries by businesses competing for the same skilled talent.
